Rugby fans will be glad to hear that Irish language broadcaster TG4 will provide extensive coverage of the Women’s Rugby World Cup from Paris next month.
TG4’s coverage will include live broadcasts of all three of Ireland’s matches in Pool B against New Zealand, USA and Kazakhstan and live action from the Semi-Finals and Final. A minimum of six matches in total will be broadcast live on TG4. The tournament begins in Paris on Friday 1st August with Ireland playing USA at 4pm that day (full TG4 schedule below).
The Women’s Rugby World Cup is the premier international competition in rugby union for women. The tournament is organised by the sport’s governing body the International Rugby Board (IRB). The championships are currently held every four years – the most recent was in England in 2010. The first Women’s Rugby World Cup was held in 1991, and won by the United States. The current world champions and the most successful team are New Zealand.
TG4’s Sports Editor, Rónán ó Coisdealbha said: “We are thrilled to be providing rugby fans all over the country with coverage of this major rugby competition as well as enhancing TG4’s well-established policy of providing women’s sport with the profile it deserves on free to view national television.”
Ireland head coach Philip Doyle has called up Sharon Lynch to the squad for the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup in France. The uncapped Old Belvedere forward is part of a 26-woman squad for the tournament while the squad will be captained by Fiona Coghlan and contains an even split of 13 forwards and 13 backs.

The 12 teams competing in the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014 have been seeded into three pools of four teams. Teams will play each other in each pool and on a round robin basis and match points will be awarded on the following basis: 4 points for a win, 2 points for a draw, 1 point for scoring 4 or more tries, 1 point for losing by 7 or less than 7 points and 0 points for a loss.
