The Connacht Clubs Girls Under18 and Under16 cup competition finals play out at the Connacht Sportsground on Saturday.

The junior final, which pits Westport against Ballina at 1.00pm, is the culmination of a month-long tri-series held around the province. The senior final has Dunmore and Connemara’s combined Under18 talents against Westport’s finest at 2.15.

“It’s the first ever bone fide underage club championship competition in Connacht,” said Wendy Hickey, Connacht Rugby’s Womens Community Rugby Officer.

“Blitzes and non-competitive exchanges have been about for a while, and we had a few in Connacht before Christmas. We’ve also had very promising exchanges with clubs from beyon Connacht borders too.

“This clubs competition was the next step, naturally,” Hickey said.

Ms Hickey said the feedback from both clubs and Branch officers had been immense, and she had no doubt girls rugby would enjoy major expansion in the next two seasons.

“All the comments, all the feedback, and of course all the enthusiasm from the girls involved in this latest campaign shows the importance of providing meaningful competitions for girls at this level.”
