Connacht U14 Cup

West Offaly Lions made their debut in this competition against a much fancied Galwegians team on Saturday in Ferbane. Following on their good form in the league the Offaly side were expected to perform well in this encounter.

After a slow start they began to get their game going and a lack lustre performance by the pack resulted in three tries by the wegians outfit, two of which were converted by scrum half Michael Daly to leave the Lions with a huge hill to climb in the 2nd half.

To their great credit the Lions pack with Ciaran Cahill to the fore, tore into the wegians team. Allied to excellent kicking by out half Leon Fox and follow up tackles by Dean Kelly and Brian Gilligan, the Lions soon scored and indeed the visitors looked out on their feet as the lions forwards dominated the opposition.

Two more tries resulted but only one was converted and the Lions began to lose their own scrum ball and this probably cost them the match.

A superb 2nd half just wasnt enough but everyone in the large attendance was really impressed with the way this team has improved during the year. More self belief will result in winning close games.

A great deal of credit must go to Peter Auret and Charlie Couper for their selfless work with the team who train again this Saturday at 12.30.

Corinthians were unable to field a team on Sunday and sacrificed the points. Training continues this Saturday at 5.30pm with high flying Creggs next on West Offaly Lions visiting list.

Another well run blitz took place this sunday against a very large Ballinasloe mini section. The West Offaly Lions teams have improved enormously this year and this looks good for the upcoming connacht blitzs. The Wett Offaly Lions teams proved too strong at all levels except U9 where a bigger turnout is needed at training which continues on sunday at 11.30am. U12s are heading to the Connacht blitz this Saturday in corinthians, cars leave at 8.30am.

Many thanks to all those who sold tickets for the raffle and indeed to all who supported it
