300Connacht Girls U15 Rugby Cup Final

Sportsground, Galway

9th March 2014

Ballinasloe RFC 31-5 Westport RFC

Played in perfect conditions on a perfect pitch, this game lived up to all expectations as the top two Girls U15 teams did battle for the Connacht Cup at the Sportsground yesterday Sunday 9th March.

Having played each other twice already this season, in a Connacht Blitz and in the league, bragging rights were even with one win each, Westport beating Ballinasloe in the Blitz and Ballinasloe winning the league fixture.

In the match, Ballinasloe scored and converted 2 early tries to lead 14 – 0, but Westport came back strong towards the end of the first half to cross the line and leave the half-time score 14 – 5 to Ballinasloe.

The second half, ebbed and flowed with some brave tackling, outstanding rucking & counter-rucking as the two teams fought for the next score. Ballinasloe had pace in their backline which was balanced with Westport‘s strong pack.

3 more tries by Ballinasloe with 1 converted in the second half put the result beyond  doubt but only late on, with Ballinasloe’s pace eventually paying off.

The final score finished 31 – 5. Try scorers for Ballinasloe were Aoibheann Reilly ( 2), Aine Galvin ( 2 ) and Aoife Horkan ( 1 ), conversions Aine Galvin ( 3 )

Many thanks to Wendy Hickey, Connacht Womens Co-ordinator for providing the platform, the support and the encouragement for Girls Rugby to showcase their talents at the Sportsground yesterday
