Young Buccs Well-Set for International Duty

Six Buccaneers youngsters featured in the Ireland Under20 squad which beat the Leinster Development XV at Donnybrook over Christmas.

The Under20s largely steered the fixture throughout, and while Leinster narrowed the deficit on two occasions the Under20s emerged 25points clear, 40-15 up at fulltime.

The four starters comprised Shane Layden (fullback), Callum Boland and Conor Finn on the wings, and Daniel Qualter shored up the second row. Prop Diarmuid Higgins and outhalf Jack Carty were both halftime substitutes, the latter making a notable contribution with a try and two conversions. Those among the six who survive the pre-tournament cull (announced following the final weekend in January), will likely be denied Ulster Bank League input until the Six Nations Championship is over. While such an eventuality will hurt the Buccaneers’ club campaign, representative call-ups constitute splendid news for the club, the lads and their families. Buccaneers wishes them all the very best. Ireland plays three home fixtures in Athlone this season, all covered live on RTE: Wales (Friday, Feb 3), Italy (Friday, Feb 24) and Scotland (Friday, March 9).

All three fixtures kick off in Dubarry Park at 7.05 pm, tickets on sale soon at club headquarters. Meanwhile, several others among Buccaneers’ rising stars are involved in other Ireland underage squads, notably the Under19 panel (Robert Henshaw and Barry Digby) and the Under18 Clubs contingent (Scott Flanagan).
